Oly Outlook: What’s Next?

Here’s a quick look at some of the upcoming regional Olympic Weightlifting events. As other events (strongman, powerlifting, crossfit, highlander) get finalized we’ll keep you posted. For now, here’s what’s coming your way on the platform. Taste the rainbow.

Upcoming Regional Oly Events:

Copperhead Open – 9/29, Van Alstyne, TX
We plan to lift here. Barn meets are always fun. Rumor has it Olympian and many-time national champion Chad Vaughn will be in the house. Also, CrossFit Games athlete Aja Barto, who won the snatch ladder in this years regional qualifier with a 134 kg snatch, is competing.

Kansas State and Open – 10/13, Olathe, KS
This looks like a massive meet – possibly a two-day event.

Heavy Hitters Halloween Invitational – 10/27, Oklahoma City, OK
This will be a smaller event for serious lifters who are either tuning-up or qualifying for nationals. If you missed your chance to qualify for the American Open this is probably your last chance. If you want to get sharp for and focused in an atmospnere of of national-level lifters this is a great chance. Should be a fantastic show.

Iron Turkey Open – 11/17, Prairie Village, KS

American Open – 11/30-12/2, Palm Springs, CA
This is my #1 goal for 2012: qualify for and lift in the American Open. Hope to see many of you there.

Christmas Blast – 12/29, Onaga, KS
Kansas has a very active LWC and they always put on big events. We’d love to hit one of these if things work out.

Texas State Meet – 1/19-1/20
Black Box II – February, Ft. Worth, TX
We lifted at the first annual Black Box Weightlifting Championships last February and really enjoyed it. I know Dutch just had a baby so this is tentative for the time being, but if he gives this the green light we’ll most likely be back with bells on.

National Juniors – 2/16-2/17

Red River Shootout – March, Durant, OK
Got some big plans in the works here. We’ll keep you informed as details emerge, but we’re very excited about the rivalry series we’re working on and this will be the inaugural offering of what we’re hoping becomes an exciting new tradition in our regional oly competitions.

National University – April (according to USAW)

Lock and Load – May (depends on nationals), Van Alstyne, TX

Senior Nationals – May/June (according to USAW)
Youth Nationals – June/July (according to USAW)

OK State Championships – July, Oklahoma City, OK
I’ll go ahead and kill the suspense: we will have an air conditioned location and this event will be even bigger and better than it was in 2012.

Our Man in London

The sole male weightlifter representing the U.S. in the London Olympics took the stage this morning and gave an outstanding effort, but ultimately fell just short of achieving Olympic fame. The live stream kicked-off about 4 a.m. SCBC time, but the London Live app allows viewing at a less obscene hour. Kendrick did a hell of a job. Was it a spectacular, once in a lifetime, magical performance? No, but it was solid and put him in position to attempt PRs and American Records in CnJ and in Total on his final attempt of 208 kgs, the heaviest attempt by any lifter in the B session. Kendrick missed the jerk, but came extremely close to winning the B session and to breaking his 2010 record of 203 kgs. Overall, he appeared focused and poised, went 4-for-6 on the day, and represented us well. Here’s the NBC write-up on Kendrick’s competition.
